Arnaldo Ferrer has been an adult care giver<\/span><\/span>\u00a0since 2013<\/span><\/span>. In 2017, he\u00a0<\/span><\/span>brought his\u00a0<\/span><\/span>vision to life\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and opened Cielo Vista Senior Day Care where his family<\/span><\/span>\u00a0works with him to provide care\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0clients. Cielo Vista specializes in the care of the disabled and elderly population of Las Vegas, N<\/span><\/span>evada,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0where clients come in the morning and spend the day. The center provides transportation to and from\u00a0<\/span><\/span>its\u00a0<\/span><\/span>clients\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/span>homes\u00a0<\/span><\/span>each day and medical\u00a0<\/span><\/span>appointments<\/span><\/span>\u00a0when needed. They have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>on<\/span><\/span>-<\/span><\/span>site nurse to help with any medical needs. Arnaldo\u2019s center focuses on mental health with two major components: nutrition and activity.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t

Each day<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the clients come to the center\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>are served a healthy<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>reakfast, snacks and lunch. The population of the center is 98% Hispanic<\/span>, for<\/span>\u00a0which\u00a0<\/span>Arnaldo\u00a0<\/span>say<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>health and nutrition play an even more critical role with cultural eating habits.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Several\u00a0<\/span>suffer from high blood pressure<\/span>,\u00a0diabetes<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and\/or\u00a0<\/span>are at risk for heart problems<\/span>. Once a month<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0a nutritionist reviews\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0the menus and\u00a0<\/span>visits with the clients at the center\u00a0<\/span>about<\/span>\u00a0nutrition information.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>-<\/span>site\u00a0<\/span>nurse<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>teaches\u00a0<\/span>classes about<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>good nutrition<\/span>al<\/span>\u00a0habits<\/span>\u00a0and healthy eating,\u00a0<\/span>focusing on advanced age.\u00a0<\/span>The nurse<\/span>\u00a0is also very involved with the clients regarding weight and nutritional eating for diabetes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The goal is to teach the clients how to make better choices when eating.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The other piece of the puzzle for improving health is social interaction<\/span>\u00a0and activity<\/span>. Arnaldo has daily activities for the seniors<\/span>. They can take part in crafts and singing with live music. They can also join in on a game of dominoes, exercise classes, or even learn English with an ESL teacher.\u00a0<\/span>They\u00a0<\/span>try to go on a park field trip three times a year, depending on mobility allowances of the clients.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe staff is\u00a0<\/span>amazing<\/span>\u00a0and we care deeply for our seniors. It is a lot of hard work, but we do the work from our hearts and it is truly gratifying.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The CACFP has played a critical role for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Arnaldo<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and Cielo Vista b<\/span><\/span>ecause nutrition is such a focal\u00a0<\/span><\/span>point\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for the center<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Arnaldo wants to provide the healthiest<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and best\u00a0<\/span><\/span>food he possibly can<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0T<\/span><\/span>he financial help from the CACFP<\/span><\/span>\u00a0allows<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Arnaldo to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>provide his clients with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>high quality, nutritious food<\/span><\/span>. With the COVID<\/span><\/span>-<\/span><\/span>19 pandemic, t<\/span><\/span>he\u00a0<\/span><\/span>center was\u00a0<\/span><\/span>certainly\u00a0<\/span><\/span>affected<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>CACFP has\u00a0<\/span><\/span>positively\u00a0<\/span><\/span>helped\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>offset the costs<\/span><\/span>\u00a0while m<\/span><\/span>any people are now choosing to stay home<\/span><\/span>. Arnaldo always wants to be able to provide the nutritional food<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0his clients need.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Diamond Center Adult Day Program is a Community Access Group<\/span><\/span>\u00a0offering\u00a0<\/span><\/span>person<\/span><\/span>-<\/span><\/span>centered services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities<\/span><\/span>\u00a0working to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0improv<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>, acquir<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>\u00a0or retain communication and socialization skills. These skills are implemented for active participation and independent functioning outside of their home setting.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sheila Russell<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0director,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0had a vision to open a center that would make a positive impact\u00a0<\/span><\/span>through enhancement and advancement of the individuals regardless of their disability.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>That vision became a reality when the Diamond Center opened in July of 2013.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t

\u201c<\/span><\/span>I believe that everyone can learn something no matter how long it may take or how simple the task may be. Engagement and positive\u00a0<\/span><\/span>r<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span>nforcement<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0as well as support in giving assistance for the goal at hand<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is extremely significant. We will continue to encourage a healthy lifestyle through diet, exercise and rest with the hope of a most enjoyable life. Community relationship is vital, giving our individuals a sense of belonging and self-worth as they volunteer and work<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>It\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>rewarding to see them celebrating their victories and joy in knowing they can accomplish much with support from those who have essential interest in their success in life.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Healthy lifestyle is a focal point for the Diamond Center.\u00a0<\/span>The center<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>encourage<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0individuals to acquire healthy dietary habits, get daily exercise, drink adequate amounts of water, participate in hands-on activities and group discussions<\/span>\u00a0- a<\/span>ll of which educates them on healthy living and how to strive for optimum health.\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>f<\/span>ter learning about CACFP,\u00a0<\/span>Sallye Jone<\/span>s, CACFP Manager,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>immediately<\/span>\u00a0enrolled the center as a member.\u00a0<\/span>As a result, the Diamond Center has been able to serve over\u00a0<\/span>36<\/span>\u00a0participants through CACFP.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We are afforded the opportunity to vend in hot lunches and serve our participants a well-balanced meal Monday<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>through\u00a0<\/span>Friday\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>CACFP<\/span>,\u201d added Jones.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

P<\/span>articipants often express how much they enjoy their meal<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>eagerly volunteer to help during lunchtime by passing out plates, utensils\u00a0<\/span>and drinks<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Water is offered throughout the day, stressing the importance of keeping the body hydrated and\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>drinking water is good for vital organs to work properly<\/span>\u00a0while<\/span>\u00a0giv<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0energy and flush<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0out toxins.\u00a0<\/span>After lunch<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0participants volunteer for clean-up duties<\/span>\u00a0by<\/span>\u00a0cleaning tables, sweeping and taking out trash under supervision. By letting them know that they are doing a great job and that they are appreciated<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0participants\u00a0<\/span>develop<\/span>\u00a0a sense of pride\u00a0<\/span>which\u00a0<\/span>reflects in their positive dispositions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Morning and afternoon exercise is implemented daily and individuals who are capable<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>complete<\/span>\u00a0jumping jacks, leg bends, running in place and other aerobic activities. Other individuals with low mobility participate<\/span>\u00a0by<\/span>\u00a0doing\u00a0<\/span>staff-assisted\u00a0<\/span>upper and lower body movements. Work-out videos are used\u00a0<\/span>occasionally<\/span>\u00a0and walk<\/span>s are taken<\/span>\u00a0outside around the building when weather permits<\/span>. All work\u00a0<\/span>together to<\/span>\u00a0help\u00a0<\/span>establish healthy habits for\u00a0<\/span>participants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Group discussions are facilitated and create an opportunity for individuals to communicate and express how they are feeling in a caring and friendly environment.\u00a0 Planning the monthly calendar is one of the highlights of discussion as they give their suggestions and exercise their options of activities<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Farmer\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Market is a favorite place to visit as they learn the difference between fruits, vegetables, and their various textures. Individuals are educated on\u00a0<\/span>the effects different foods have on the body and k<\/span>nowing how to differentiate nutrient dense<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>whole foods from junk foods<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u00a0<\/span>are given the option of choosing simple healthy recipes they would like to make during \u201cLook and Make\u201d activity. They may choose to learn how to make a fruit salad, smoothie or yogurt parfait with fresh strawberries.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Holidays are acknowledged by hosting special luncheons and parties<\/span>, with participants<\/span>\u00a0preparing for the occasions by helping to decorate<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>creating the perfect ambiance for the occasion. They also dress up in s<\/span>e<\/span>mi-formal attire and take pictures. A nutritious and delicious lunch is served<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0incorporating fresh fruits and leafy green salads.<\/span>\u00a0Parents, providers and other core team members are invited and always welcomed to the Diamond Center.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>goal at the Diamond Center Adult Day Program is for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>individuals to proceed to a higher level than their initial admission. It is very important to encourage healthy living, healthy diet and to engage individuals in ISP goals and community integration.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Diamond Center continuously strives to lead by example\u00a0<\/span>regarding<\/span>\u00a0principles of nutrition<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>encourag<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0healthier choices in every aspect of li<\/span>fe\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0will continue to provide support<\/span>\u00a0looking at<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>individuals as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
